Charges are expected in juvenile court in the next few days against three juvenile males suspected of vandalizing the bronze Doreen Wilber statue in Jefferson last month.
According to Jefferson police chief Mark Clouse, the offenders are ages 15, 13 and 7. The JPD will seek restitution for the necessary repair, but that decision will be made by juvenile court.
By Iowa Code, the names of youthful offenders cannot be released. The Code was changed as of July 1 increasing the confidentiality of juvenile offenders.
The statue of Olympic gold medalist Doreen Wilber, on the southwest corner of the intersection of W. Lincoln Way and Vine St, shows her with three arrows in her quiver. During the night of June 12-13, one arrow was broken off and two were bent.
The arrows have been repaired by retired high school vocational teacher Dan Benitz. Sculptor Jeff Adams, creator of the statue, will be in Jefferson in late August to repair the patina where Benitz welded the broken arrow back in place.
